Viral Marketing

What’s the most powerful element of Web 2.0? If I ask this question to a smart marketing head of a Fortune 500 firm or an entrepreneur, their immediate answer would be “Viral Marketing”. In the last decade, we’ve seen so many novel and successful viral marketingcampaigns which have made an impact on billions of people around the world. You’ll find that most of these great campaigns had two things in common:

1.       The idea was innovative

2.       No money/negligible money was spent to make the campaign successful

Why do people like somethings and why do they spread it…

People like an idea because it immediately connects with them through an emotion or addresses one of their needs. To get people to share the ideas they connect with is the key to viral marketing. As the marketing guru Seth Godin puts it, people will not share the idea unless

1.       they understand it

2.       they want it to spread

3.       they believe that spreading it will enhance their power (reputation, income,  friendships) or their peace of mind

4.       the effort necessary to send the idea is less than the benefits

Of course you can learn a lot from the viral marketing success of hotmail, Batman, Cadbury’s, Gmail and thousands of other campaigns. But, you can’t use the same idea again, because it simply doesn’t work that way! The key is to “innovate”
